HS Coaches: Watch those pitch counts...
Some things to consider: Many professional scouts and college coaches will be turned off by a pitcher who they learn has thrown an excessive amount of pitches in any one game or week. Recently, I learned of a top HS prospect at an area high school throwing in excess of 150 pitches in one evening.  To further complicate the matter, the pitcher was used just two days prior in another competitive situation that required quality work and intensity.  It could take days, weeks, or months for misuse to catch up to a pitcher--but it DOES catch up.  As a general rule, try to limit your kids longest outings to 1/2 of their body weight.  For example, a 200-pound pitcher should be cut off around 100 pitches.  Finally, if a pitcher works at or slightly beyond their maximum load, two FULL days of rest should be taken and a minimum of 96 hours should elapse before competitive pitches are again thrown.  Ice should be applied immediately after throwing.  Waiting until a pitcher gets home 90 minutes after pitching is too late. We are learning more and more about how to develop strong and durable arms.  Coaches, let's use the information available to better the long-term viability of our athletes.
